The Hyattsville VFD concluded 2013 with another busy, successful and safe year which saw many milestones and special events as we celebrated our 125th Anniversary.

The department topped 5,500 total responses for the fourth straight year. Engine 1 responded to 1,323 calls, Rescue Squad to 662. Truck 1 had 591 responses — the highest total in the last 25 years. And the ambulance stayed busy with 3,007 calls — the fifth straight year over 3,000 unit responses. Be sure to check out our historical stats page here.

Another milestone for the year was topping 100 total active operational and administrative members — this includes over 20 new members currently in various phases of training from Volunteer Recruit School to EMT. We continued to step our recruitment efforts and will continuing that in 2014 with the release of several new recruitment videos, various marketing campaigns for local and live-in members and more.

hvfd-anniversary-shieldnofill-colorThe HVFD celebrated 125 years of service in 2013 with three major events, starting in March with our Memorial & Remembrance Service for the three HVFD volunteer firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The HVFD honored the 25th Anniversary of the Line of Duty passing of Volunteer Firefighter Alan P. Sondej, who died on March 16, 1988 from burns sustained in a January 1988 house fire, as well as the 60th Anniversary of the loss of Volunteer Firefighters John T. Streets and William R. Stainback, who died in October 1953 when our ladder truck was struck by a vehicle. Many current and former members of the HVFD attended, along with local fire service and community leaders.

In October, we hosted hundreds of HVFD alumni spanning many generations going back to the 1950’s during our Anniversary, Groundbreaking & Open House weekend. See the links below for more information about the new facility and our events.

We’re also pleased to announce our 2014 slate of line, staff and administrative officers, including several members whose time and dedication to the HVFD was recognized with promotions or new officer opportunities. You can browse the full list here.
