Busy Week Ends with Three Fires in 24 Hours, Junkyard Squad Training

The HVFD kept busy the last week of July with five fires, including three in 24 hours. For the week, 44 HVFD volunteers provided operational staffing.

Riverdale Road House Fire

At 0142 hours on Sunday, July 31, Engine, Truck & Ambulance 1 were dispatched to a reported house fire at 4912 Riverdale Road in Co. 7’s (Riverdale) first due. First arriving units to the two-story single family home reported smoke showing.

The engine, responding as second due, picked up Engine 7’s line and pulled a line to Division 1. Truck 1, first due special service, operated on Division 1 and searched. Units operated for a little over two hours. Chief 1, operated as Battalion Chief 4, had the command. The HVFD responded with

Truck First Arriving on Tuckerman Street House Fire

At 1120 hours on Saturday, July 30, Truck and Ambulance 1 were alerted for a reported house fire at 5014 Tuckerman Street in Co. 7’s (Riverdale) first due. Truck 1 arrived with smoke showing from Side Alpha. A 360 by the tillerman reported fire showing from the Charlie and Bravo sides of the home.

Chief 1, as Battalion Chief 4, arrived to assume command. The Truck crew entered to find fire in the kitchen rapidly extending. Truck 1 assisted the engine companies opening up the kitchen area ceiling and the walls and conducted searches along with Truck 9. The outside crew threw ladders, went to the roof and assisted with outside ventilation. The company returned to service at 1329 hours.

The ambulance crew transported one civilian to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Squad Training at Junkyard

As HVFD units operated on Tuckerman Street, other HVFD volunteers were able to get some “tool time” with the Rescue Squad at Smith’s Junkyard. Company 27, Morningside, was also drilling at Smith’s in Cheverly on Saturday. HVFD members were able to hone their extrication and stabilization skills, with several continuing their progression to being turned over as fully qualified to operate on the Squad company.

48th Street House Fire Brings Engine & Truck Company

At 0129 hours on Saturday, July 30, Engine & Truck 1 (4th due engine and 3rd due truck) were alerted to the area of 3905 48th Street in Co. 9’s (Bladensburg) first due for a reported house fire. Units from Co. 9 arrived on scene with smoke showing from Side Alpha and fire showing from Side Charlie. Crews operated for just under an hour before returning to service, performing searches, opening up and standing by with an additional attack line.

Engine First Due on College Park Fire

At 1826 hours on Wednesday, July 27, Engine Company and Ambulance 1 was dispatched first due to 4806 Harvard Road in Co. 12’s (College Park) first due for a reported fire in the house. The crew arrived, pulling a crosslay through the front door. The 360 report was smoke showing from all sides of the home and fire showing from Side Delta. Inside, the crew found fire in the kitchen which was extinguished and Truck 14 opened up, along with Truck 12 and other units completing exterior/interior work and searches. Units operated for less than an hour.

Engine Company on Branchville House Fire WFD

At 1945 on Monday, July 25, Engine Company 1 was alerted to 8316 Potomac Avenue in Co. 11’s first due on the Working Fire Dispatch. On arrival, the crew was advised to stand bye with a line at the door. The line was pulled from Co. 31’s wagon and the crew went to work inside assisting with overhaul and putting out some spot fire. The company assisted crews in racking up and cleared the scene in less than an hour.
