Mayday Quickly Cleared on Baltimore Ave House Fire – Audio, Video, Pics

A section of wall collapsed as firefighters battled an early morning house fire in Riverdale, briefly trapping them as a Mayday was called. Thankfully, none were seriously injured and all residents also escaped the fire unharmed.

At about 0149 hours on Friday, May 19, units from Riverdale, Hyattsville, Bladensburg and surrounding companies were dispatched to the 6100 block of Baltimore Avenue for a reported house fire. Units arrived in the area within minutes but found no evidence of a house fire. A third call reported an updated address of the 6700 block of Baltimore Ave, about a half mile away. Chief 1B, Smolinsky, arrived reporting significant fire conditions from a two-story home.

Several minutes into the incident, a partial collapse on the side of the house briefly trapped several firefighters under (see photo below). Crews quickly called a Mayday and assisted the firefighters out from under the materials.

Truck 1 remained on the scene until nearly 5 am assisting with overhaul and investigations.

Several University of Maryland students were displaced by the fire.

Two firefighters were treated and released from area hospitals, one related to the Mayday and another with a minor back injury.
