Truck 1 Works College Park House Fire

At 0434 hours on Saturday, January 3rd, Truck 1 was dispatched to the 7400 block of Dartmouth Avenue in Co. 12s first due for a reported house fire. Co. 12 arrived with fire showing from the second floor of a two-story split level.

Truck 1 arrived with a crew of eight and assumed first due special service responsibilities. The interior crew entered the second floor and started searches while the outside crew threw six ground ladders, ventilated and removed the garage door. As conditions deteriorated inside, crews were evacuated, regrouped and went back in to knock down the fire and open up. Searches were negative. Truck 1 remained on the scene until 0700 to assist with overhaul and the investigation.

Working smoke alarms had sounded a warning alerting and waking up the six occupants in the house. The occupants escaped the fire prior to our arrival and were not injured. The County Citizen Services Unit was assisting the students with temporary shelter, according to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department spokesperson Mark Brady.

Firefighters had the fire extinguished with 45 minutes of arrival. One firefighter sustained minor burn injuries to both wrists and was transported to the Burn Unit at Med Star Washington Hospital Center. No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Fire Investigators continue their search for the cause of the fire and remains under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $200,000.
