At about 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, November 2nd, Truck 1 was alerted for a reported building fire in the area of University Blvd and Riggs Road in the first due of Co. 34, Chillum Adelphi. Units arrived on the scene with a working fire at the Family Dollar store, a stand-alone structure built in 1957 that is nearly 8,000 square feet.
Engine Company 34 arrived with a large pile of garbage burning on the exterior with extension inside, smoke pushing from all four corners of the roof and visible fire in the roof area. Truck 1 cut down four roll-down security gates, threw multiple ground ladders and forced entry into sides alpha and bravo. The crew also conducted primary and secondary searches and opened up. The driver and tillerman opened up the roof.
The fire was running the attic and the second alarm was sounded amid concerns of the heavy fuel load and high winds. The fire was declared out about 30 minutes after arrival.
Truck 1 later cut a trench cut from Side a to Side C along the outside wall to ensure no further hot spots or fire spread.
Truck 1, operating with a crew of eight volunteers, returned to service after about three hours.
No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $75,000, according to Mark Brady, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department Public Information Officer.
