On Tuesday, May 20, Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to 9013 Gettysburg Ln. On arrival Co.11 had fire showing through the roof. Rescue Squad 1 took RIT, performed exterior ventilation, secured utilities and assisted with overhaul. Chief 1B, Smolinsky, had interior (Division 2).
The HVFD was providing all volunteer staffing during the day as part of the county’s Volunteer Staffing Utilization (VSU) program, aimed at reducing overtime as our daytime career staff is assigned to other stations. This takes place typically 1-2 times per month, during which volunteers staff the station 7a-5p when the day crew would otherwise provide primary staffing.
Beyond the VSU days, the HVFD provides 100% volunteer staffing weekdays after 5pm, all holidays and weekends — typically more than 75-80% of all responses from the HVFD are 100% volunteer. Volunteers also providing supporting staffing during weekday hours as available in partnership with our county-provided day crew who we share an excellent working relationship with.
