Shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to the 2000 block of East West Highway in Chillum for a vehicle accident with confirmed entrapment by Paramedic Engine 844, the first-arriving unit. Squad 1’s crew of five arrived to find a Chevy Astrovan against a tree on the passenger’s side with both the driver and passenger trapped inside. The crew stabilized the van and removed both the driver and passenger doors within seven minutes of arriving on the scene.
It was the third extrication for the Rescue Squad since Sunday. The HVFD has been operating 100% volunteer since Friday afternoon, with the Martin Luther King holiday giving county day staff off on Monday and our regular VSU (Volunteer Staffing Utilization) day today. In the last four days, two dozen HVFD volunteers have provided around-the-clock fire, rescue and EMS service to our community responding to dozens of emergency and non-emergency calls.
